Grade 8’s in Washington D.C. – Day 3

Today we walked back to the National Museum of American History. We saw lots of interesting artifacts and information, along with artifacts that many of us recognized; like the ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz and Sesame Street puppets. We also learned a bit about US history and got to see fancy clothes that belonged to the First Ladies. We then made our way to the Holocaust Museum to look through the archives. We saw the history of our ancestors, and learned about the horrific events that they had to endure. That activity was very emotional for our class. Did you know that the Washington DC Holocaust Museum is made to look like the cattle car stations that were used in World War II?

After the archives we went to grab lunch and then returned to the museum to look through the permanent exhibit, which covers the entire timeline of the Holocaust. This really made our class appreciate our lives, and even though we had already studied a lot about what was shared in the exhibit, it really shook us looking at the images, watching videos, and seeing replicas from Nazi Germany and concentration camps. Seeing images of victims with their tattoos and walking through a cattle car was very powerful and moving. After that we made our way to the end of the exhibit and into the Hall of Remembrance and recited the Mourner’s Kaddish to commemorate the millions of lives taken by Hitler and the Nazi’s hatred and plans for the Final Solution.

After the museum, we made our way back to the hotel for some rest, and then we went to the Pentagon Mall where we got the chance to visit some of our favourite American stores. Not only did we get to do some SERIOUS retail therapy, we got to have some tasty treats like Chick-fil-a and ice cream. We also got to end the night at Target with some even more amazing shopping memories. Unfortunately, some of us had a fashion crisis, but it was all good at the end of the day.  Lastly, we got to play guess the Taylor Swift song on the bus ride home, which resulted in us having a huge blast.
