New York, New Bonds: Grade 9 Students Take on the Big Apple

Our Grade 9 students recently returned from an incredible journey to New York City, a trip filled with culture, history, discovery, and unforgettable memories. From the moment they landed, they hit the ground running and didn’t look back.

Their adventure began in the heart of the Lower East Side, where they explored stories of immigration, resilience, and community. At the Tenement Museum, they learned about the inspiring Jewish women who protested a 50% rise in kosher meat prices in the late 1800s history brought to life in a way textbooks can’t replicate. From there, they stepped into the vibrant world of Katz’s Deli, followed by a bit of shopping and city exploration, all leading up to a major highlight: a live performance of Hamilton on Broadway.

The next day deepened their understanding of New York’s layered past. With expert local guide Barry Judelman, they explored the Jewish roots of the Lower East Side and witnessed the ongoing story of gentrification in this historic neighborhood. A stop for fresh babka and rugelach at a local kosher bakery added the perfect local flavor, and a tour of the Bialystoker Synagogue revealed fascinating stories including a surprising connection to Jewish gangster Bugsy Siegel.

The day also included a fun and flavorful visit to the Museum of Ice Cream, where students let loose on a two-story slide and sampled unlimited sweet treats. That evening, the group attended Kabbalat Shabbat at Park Avenue Synagogue, ending the day with reflection, tradition, and a sense of community.

On the following day, they visited Battery Park to tie their historical learning to themes from Hamilton, followed by a visit to the 9/11 Memorial, a somber and powerful experience that encouraged thoughtful reflection. After some free time to grab lunch and explore, students enjoyed a surprise dinner at Gail’s Broadway Rose, where singing servers delivered show-stopping performances right at the table. The night ended on a high-energy note at a Yankees vs. Padres game, a New York moment to remember.

The final day offered a different kind of perspective 93 floors above the city at a breathtaking observation deck, followed by a sunny stroll through Central Park. They made time for one last New York treat at William Green Desserts and Lexington Candy Shop, followed by a farewell visit to Times Square. The trip wrapped up with a magical harbour lights boat cruise, where calm waters and a glowing skyline provided the perfect send-off.

This trip was more than just a tour of a world-class city; it was an opportunity for our Grade 9 students to step outside the classroom and grow together. They strengthened friendships, built new connections, and discovered more about themselves and the world around them. Whether through shared laughter, moments of awe, or thoughtful reflection, this journey created lifelong memories and helped shape the start of a meaningful high school experience.

We’re so proud of how our students represented our school with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a spirit of adventure every step of the way.
